Lauder Alumni Pitch-It Competition

Pitch-It Time: 3:00pm – 4:00pm
Twenty Lauderites will take the stage to pitch their business or concept to a panel of prominent Lauder alumni and an audience of fellow alumni. Each entrepreneur will have two minutes to pitch in this fast-paced, light-hearted showcase. Alumni can enter to compete in one for the following three categories:
- Concept: Business plan stage
- In-Development: Building the prototype, but not yet in market
- In-Market: Product or service recently launched in the market (within the past two years)
The first seven applicants in the first two categories and the first six in the third will compete to win in their division.
The competition will be judged by a panel of prominent Lauder alumni. The 2016 judges panel:
Entry and Registration
Space is limited to 20 pitches. The final deadline to apply is September 15, 2016. If you are in a team, only one member of the team needs to register to pitch.
Anyone who has an entrepreneurial idea or early stage startup company is welcome to apply for the purposes of receiving feedback and making connections with the Lauder alumni community.
Submissions may be entered as individuals or teams of up to three.
Each individual or team pitching may enter only one idea or concept.
Each individual or team member must be registered to attend the Lauder Global Alumni Weekend.
A nominal fee of $50 per idea/company is required at time of registration to secure your spot. If you are not selected to compete, the registration fee will be refunded.
The pitched idea or concept must be the original work of the individual or team pitching it.
Open to Lauder alumni and current Lauder students, only.
The Lauder Global Alumni Weekend Organizing Committee has the sole discretion to disqualify and/or remove any individual or teams for any reason that it deems appropriate before and/or during the pitch competition for violation of these rules. All decisions regarding an individual’s or team’s removal and/or disqualification from the pitch it competition are final.
The objective of the pitch is to explain the product, service, or value proposition two minutes. This is your chance to give us your best sales pitch. Focus on what the product or service is and how it is going to add value.
Begin the pitch with an interesting question or statement that piques the interest of the judges and the audience.
Value Proposition – What exactly is the product or service? What problem does it solve or opportunity it creates?
- Product or Service – Briefly describe the product or service.
- Value Proposition – How is the product or service going to add value?
- Target Market – Who will be buying the product or service?
- Market Size – How big is the target market?
- Differentiation – How is the product or service different from existing competition? What is your competitive advantage? i.e. patent, algorithm, unique service model, etc.)
- Revenue Model – How will the product or service generate revenue? (sales, subscription, advertisement, etc.)
Time is of the essence. There are two (2) minutes allocated to each individual or team pitching an idea or concept. There is (1) minute allocated for a Q & A session with the judges. In total, each individual or team pitching will have three (3) minutes maximum; two (2) minutes to pitch the idea or concept and one (1) minute to answer questions from judges. Time will begin when the presenter begins to speak.
5) Other Guidelines
The use of PowerPoint or slide presentations is limited to three slides per team that MUST be provided to the event organizers no later than October 1, 2016. Individuals or teams may also bring prototypes and samples to support their pitch. No additional materials may be distributed to the judges or the audience during the pitch. Each participant will be provided one screen in the conference app where they can provide the company/product name, a one-sentence description and basic contact details.
Confidentiality is not guaranteed in any way. Do not include confidential material in your submissions. There is no way for the Lauder Global Alumni Weekend organizers to enforce a prohibition of other competitors, audience members, or judges who see and hear a pitch competitor’s materials from sharing the idea and/or materials.
Non Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) between a competitor and the judges and/or audience members will not be required or allowed.
Sharing your idea or concept may be deemed a public disclosure, so if you are interested in filing a patent, you may need to consult with a patent attorney before entering the competition.
Lauder Global Alumni Weekend organizers are not responsible for any confidentiality issues that may occur during the course of the competition and will not be involved in any way with disputes arising therefrom.
Lauder Global Alumni Weekend organizers may take photographs and/or video of any materials used or made available by pitching individuals or teams during the competition for public relations purposes. Any content presented by a contestant should be considered public knowledge.
First and second place award certificates will be presented to the winning teams in each category at the Soirée following the competition.
ALL PARTICIPANTS ACKNOWLEDGE THAT NO SOLICITATION FOR FUNDING CAN BE MADE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEIR PITCH AND THAT THEIR PITCH IS NOT AN OFFERING, RATHER AN OVERVIEW OF THEIR BUSINESS IDEA, PRODUCT OR CONCEPT.
PARTICIPANTS AND ATTENDEES ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ANY SUBSEQUENT DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN PITCH IT PARTICIPANTS AND EVENT ATTENDEES ARE UNAFFILIATED WITH THE JOSEPH H. LAUDER INSTITUTE FOR MANAGEMENT & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES AND THE LAUDER INSTITUTE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION.
THE LAUDER GLOBAL ALUMNI WEEKEND ORGANIZING COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY ANY ENTRY IN ITS’ JUDGEMENT THAT VIOLATES THE RULES OF THE COMPETITION OR IS NOT ALIGNED WITH THE PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION.
THE LAUDER GLOBAL ALUMNI WEEKEND ORGANIZING COMMITTEE ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THE CONFIDENTIALITY OF ANY INFORMATION DISCLOSED DURING THE COMPETITION.
